Losing a tooth—whether from decay, trauma, or extraction—leaves more than a gap in your smile. It can affect chewing, speech, and even the alignment of surrounding teeth over time. Two of the most common replacement options are dental implants and dental bridges. Here’s how they compare.
Dental Implants
A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone, which fuses with bone over several months (a process called osseointegration) before a crown is attached on top.
Pros:
- Doesn’t rely on or alter neighboring teeth
- Stimulates the jawbone, helping prevent bone loss
- Typically lasts 15–25+ years with good care
- Functions and feels like a natural tooth
Cons:
- Higher upfront cost
- Requires adequate bone density
- Total treatment time is longer, often 3–6 months, including healing
Dental Bridges
A bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring an artificial tooth (pontic) to the crowns placed on the adjacent teeth.
Pros:
- Faster to complete—often within 2–3 visits
- Lower upfront cost than implants
- No surgery required
Cons:
- Requires shaving down healthy adjacent teeth to hold the crowns
- Doesn’t stop bone loss in the area of the missing tooth
- Typically needs replacement every 10–15 years
How to Decide
The right choice depends on your bone health, the condition of neighboring teeth, budget, and how much time you can commit to treatment. As a general rule:
- If your adjacent teeth are healthy and you’d rather not alter them, and you have (or can build) enough jawbone, an implant is usually the stronger long-term investment.
- If the neighboring teeth already need crowns, or you need a faster, lower-cost solution, a bridge may make more sense.
An in-person evaluation—including a 3D scan of your jawbone—is the only reliable way to know which option fits your mouth.
